Stop Eviction, Apply for Rent Relief
The CDC ended their moratorium on evictions in October 2021, leaving many Americans with no option other than facing eviction proceedings and losing their homes. Despite COVID illnesses, job losses, and other COVID related issues being the root cause for falling behind on rent, federal help ended with the termination of the eviction moratorium.
Virginia has created its own way to protect both landlords and tenants. Virginians can apply for rent relief under Governor Northam's budget bill. The protection against being evicted would extend to June 30, 2022. You can apply for rent relief from the Virginia Rent Relief Program at https://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/rmrp
If you are eligible for relief, your landlord cannot start any court action to get possession or evict you from your home. In fact, you may want to encourage your landlord to apply for relief under the Virginia Rent Relief Program. If they are eligible, they can request 18 months of back rent, which helps everyone.
